This morning I was in the mood for a dark lip and bang collaboration and I needed my outfit to express the same moody sentiments. This weather is cold but it brings with it the sartorial advantage of wearing whatever you feel like. Bohemian to classic, vintage to avant-garde, everything makes the cut. Because that’s the kind of season Fall is; fashion freedom with no rules.
I took a page out of my style hero Christine Centenera’s book and went for leggings under a skirt and tossed a blazer on top. Wearing pants or leggings under a skirt gives me an alternative to the traditional black tights I wear ad nauseum this time of the year.

I am only blogging about this today, but this vintage sweater duster coat saved me last winter during my pregnancy. I wore it to Fashion Week, to pick the kids up from school, grocery store errands. Everywhere. I fell in fashion love. It was everything I wanted in cold-weather wear, and coincidentally, everything I needed. It kept me so warm but gave me that shot of sartorial satisfaction we sometimes lose out on during the winter months. I continue to hunt down similar pieces in the hopes that i can carry on donning these winter wonders, and keep my seasonal depression at bay. I have been using Etsy as a main source for sweater coats (and many other pieces) as I posted in the past, which you can try along with the traditional brick and mortar vintage shops.
Just a few outfits I wore over this month during the holidays, and I’m grateful for the weather we’ve been having which has been facilitating the lack of outerwear (trench coat in the rainstorm aside).
I attended a Chanukah celebration at my kid’s school, and it was the perfect occasion to finally wear my white MIMU MAXI Cascade dress. I am proud to call the MIMU girls my friends, but I also have to say, they do know how to design a versatile and beautiful dress. This piece served me expertly, as I completed Chanukah projects and decorated donuts, all while covering knees and keeping me chic.
I obsess a perfect white dress to pair with black leather accents for Fall, but this will be equally prodigious in the warmer months ahead; seasonally transcendental, as are most of the MIMU MAXI designs. A modest fashion girl’s year-round must have. I was able to keep the rest of the outfit classic with simple accoutrements, and allow the volume and drape of the dress to stand out.
By now most of us have seen (and gasped over) the caped creations presented at the Valentino Couture show in New York. While the message was definitively bride-worthy, the universal sartorial inspiration was palpable and left me no choice but to don my own modest rendition. This cloaked coverup can be worn in virtually any style capacity ranging from formal, à la last week’s Valentino, to cozy like a Chloé girl off the 2014 Pre-Fall runway. Part of the allure of a cape is that what you wear underneath is almost irrelevant; your outerwear is making the greater statement. All the other details are your personal expression of style that make the look your own.
I find myself reaching for one of the capes in my closet most mornings, in an almost instinctual attempt at keeping warm yet retaining my wardrobe aesthetic. This morning I chose to wear it buttoned-up, with a green (faux) leather skirt and completed the look with a vintage broach from My Mother’s Armoire.
