We have all grown to know and love the midi length in our lives. It is obsessively hunted, purchased, worn, and posted the world over, and it seems to be the sartorial staple of the year. But it may need to move its fabulous self over a tad to make room for the new new length: the ankle length. If you thought it couldn’t get any chicer, think again. Ankle length skirts are resurfacing and they are fresher than ever, in the form of ball gown skirts, pleats, and dresses. The perfect necessary space for showcasing the shoes, ankle grazing skirts and dresses are ladylike, yet maintain their cool factor and remain current. And while I can’t say I’ve moved on from the midi just yet, I can’t help but indulge in this trend right now.

It is not a new concept by far (Leandra Medine’s Man Repeller has created an entire empire from this one abstraction alone), yet it’s staying power is an enigmatic anomaly for sure. You would assume that, scientifically, Women should be dressing for Men; yet Fashion dictates a separate set of rules that we can’t help but follow. We dress for ourselves, even when the men in our lives don’t really…get it. From anything oversized, the sweatshirt and button-down pairings, to full midi skirts, oxford flats and socks, and the occasional furry oddity, the fashion we so desperately love is not necessarily what screams femininity and grace. It is on a much more powerful level that calls to us straight from the runway and pours out onto the streets. We abandon all sense and science for these things, and it is a fabulous liberation for our closets and ourselves. It transgresses the typical rules of proper proportions, color, pattern and beauty, and we embrace it regardless.
Suffice to say, this is a fashion revolution of the best kinds (especially for the modest fashion clad as the most recent bout of trends cater to the tznius fashionista). Just ask the likes of Phoebe Philo of Céline, and Stella McCartney, whose Fall 2013 collections turned the world of street style on its head; what with their truckloads of plaids, pinstripes, tremendously cocooned menswear coats, and midis, midis everywhere, it’s hard not to notice, and covet, the styles that have taken over and left most men pondering…What on Earth is she wearing? However, if it sets your heart into a fit of palpitations, and you Need. It. Now. – then wear it, and remember that translating the high fashion and seemingly preposterous onto a women who is happy and confident in her clothes is all that really matters. And that is a beautiful thing.

This season it seems the ultimate style staple may very well be The Sweatshirt. The street style arena has been filled with this particular piece, and it is just the coolest top we could have ever prayed for. It is casually classic but most importantly it is unexpected; who would have foreseen this barrage of sweatshirt-meets-chic skirt pairings taking over the streets? In fashion, the unpredictable serves us well and we are always thinking up newer elements of surprise. This one is perfect and definitely fits the bill, by sitting squarely between being dressed up and dressed down. The printed options are popular but you can achieve the look with equal panache by donning a plain old sweat-top. Wear it alone, or layered over a button-down, and pair it with leather pencils or full midis for that cool-girl style we can’t get enough of.
